Titanic Sinks (Pelin Su Uludoğan 167 9/B)

Titanic Sinks
Name of the book is “Titanic Sinks” by Barry Denenberg. It is about an enormous ship called Titanic. When they started to build this ship, they want it to be huge and unsinkable. Their achievement was luxury and comfort not speed. They combined every superior quality of every great ship. Design process begins on April 30, 1907. Its length was 882 feet 9 inches (269 meters). Its height was 175 feet (53.3 meters). It cost 7.5 million dollars. Launching happened on April 10, 1912. They wanted to build the biggest ship hat has been made by the mankind. Captain Smith, a very famous captain, takes command of the Titanic. People named this giant ship as The Queen of the Ocean.
The passengers in the ship were divided in groups. There was first-class, second-class, and third-class. The quality of the journey decreases, as the class drops. For example, first-class passengers were able to eat whenever they want and whatever they want. As for the third-class passengers, they only could eat the simplest food. Third-class passengers need to be examined by the doctors before getting on to the ship.
The rooms for different groups, had a lot of difference. For example, third-class passenger rooms are near to the sea, while first-class is on the top, and second-class is in the middle. They considered comfort and luxury on first-class passenger rooms, while they only put basic needs on the room like a bed. So millionaires were travelling in first-class. There were 899 workers in total.
The ship first designed to have 32 lifeboats, but that number reduced to 16. Which was quite a shame when the ship hit the iceberg at 15 April 1912 11:40 p.m. and sank 2 hours and 40 minutes later. When the ship first hit the iceberg, people were rushing to the lifeboats. They decided that women and children go first. Captain Smith, and Titanic’s designer went down with the ship. The eight musicians in the ship’s orchestra, continued to play until they lost their lives. White Star Chairman, Bruce Ismay stated that “We spent two hours discussing the carpet for the First Class cabins and fifteen minutes discussing lifeboats.” after the sinking.
